SCIANCE

Shaping AI in Science, by Scientists, for Europe

SCIANCE Project

The EU-funded SCIANCE project supports the development of the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE) and coordinates AI-enabled scientific research across Europe through a bottom-up approach. The project mobilises leading European scientific organisations and research infrastructures across five pilot areas together with AI research centres and e-infrastructures. SCIANCE will identify AI-in-science research and innovation priorities and pilot the structure of the RAISE Secretariat for AI in science.

AI is rapidly reshaping how science is conducted. From analysing vast astrophysical datasets to accelerating drug discovery and improving climate modelling, AI is becoming a fundamental driver of scientific discovery. However, despite significant investments and technological progress, Europe’s AI-enabled research landscape remains fragmented across disciplines, infrastructures, and communities. The SCIANCE project was created to address this challenge and to help Europe harness AI’s full potential for scientific advancement.

What We Do

Combining disciplinary excellence across five pilot domains with state-of-the-art AI expertise and access to critical computing and data infrastructures, the consortium co-develops the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) for AI in Science and pilots the long-term coordination structure Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE).

Built on a bottom-up scientific leadership model, SCIANCE ensures that priorities emerge directly from research communities. Scientific domain coordinators are supported by leading AI research institutes, major European e-infrastructures, and strong policy and industry networks, creating a unique alliance with the scientific depth, technological capability, infrastructure access, and governance expertise required to advance AI-enabled science across Europe.

Map the European
AI in Science Landscape

> Gather evidence on AI use in and for scientific research in Europe
> Deliver comprehensive state-of-the-art reviews and landscape analysis
> Identify good practices on AI-enabled science

Co-Define Strategic
R&I Priorities

> Identify SRIA priorities through expert inputs, co-creation workshops and community consultations
> AI in Science long-term challenges across scientific pilot areas
> AI for Science applications
> Interdisciplinary cooperation

Assess Infrastructure Upgrade Scenarios

> Identify gaps in computing, data access, governance, and skills for AI-enabled science
> Co-design upgrade scenarios and cooperation mechanisms, and evaluate their feasibility
> Develop a roadmap aligned with EU strategic initiatives

Enable AI in Science Community Building

> Pilot for RAISE Secretariat, Digital Hub and Academy
> Organise community events at AI in Science summits (AIS)
> Support the development of  the European AI in Science Community

How We Work

SCIANCE adopts a bottom-up approach for the identification of AI in science research priorities, bringing together scientists, researchers, infrastructures experts through the AI in Science Working Groups to identify priorities and opportunities that reflect the needs from the research community. Through interdisciplinary exchanges, strategic feedback and community engagement, the project supports cross-domain cooperation, improves access to data, infrastructure and skills, and strengthens the visibility and integration of the European AI in Science ecosystem.

SCIANCE Consortium

The SCIANCE consortium brings together leading scientific organisations, AI research centres, digital infrastructure providers, and policy experts to strengthen Europe’s AI in Science ecosystem.
